<image:title>AR1 Program - There’s more.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nobody heads out for daily recreation expecting to take a ride in the rescue helicopter, but each day the highly skilled paramedics, rescue technicians, and pilots of Air Rescue One are prepped and ready to help you in your time of need. Seventy percent of the missions are for severe traumatic injuries and medical incidents with the remainder being rescues for those lost or stranded. The people we rescue are just like you. They are almost never extreme dare devils or crazy adventurers. They are everyday people out mountain biking, skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, riding horses, or just walking their dog. The AR1 program works alongside ground SAR groups and other emergency services across the Thompson Okanagan to rescue you and your loved ones through the 911 emergency service. Our rescues are delivered at NO COST to the patient, helping you in your time of need.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In late 2021, AROHWS launched a groundbreaking fundraising campaign to strengthen helicopter rescue capability in the Southern Interior. Our goal was to raise $400,000 to acquire a dedicated rescue winch. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors and the support of BC Community Gaming, we successfully reached this milestone and purchased a state-of-the-art rescue winch. The winch is a Collins Goodrich external hoist featuring 290 feet of cable, a 600-pound lift capacity, and a high-speed deployment rate of 260 feet per minute — a critical capability for time-sensitive rescues in complex terrain. Following this achievement, AROHWS focused on securing a dedicated rescue aircraft to fully integrate this capability. In 2024, we reached a major operational milestone by contracting a dedicated Bell 412EP rescue helicopter through our air carrier partner. The aircraft underwent extensive modification to serve as a specialized rescue platform, and the helicopter and winch became fully operational in December 2024. Today, AROHWS is actively conducting helicopter rescue operations across the region — but our work is not finished. Our current priorities include improving the outfitting of our medical and rescue interior, maintaining continuous crew training, and advancing critical system upgrades to improve mission performance. At the same time, AROHWS is working toward two major next-phase objectives: the development of a dedicated rescue base and training facility, and the implementation of night vision capability to expand safe rescue operations into low-light and nighttime conditions. These advancements will significantly increase readiness, safety, and the number of lives we can reach. Your support keeps this life-saving service operational and moving forward. Together, we can ensure helicopter rescue remains ready day, night, and year-round - when it is needed most.</image:caption>

<image:title>Press & Media - Castanet, July 8, 2025 Adventurers are being reminded to stay on marked trails when outdoors after a Monday night rescue. It was around 7 p.m. when a report of two hikers at the bottom of the waterfalls at Fintry Provincial Park, sent West Kelowna Fire Rescue and the North Westside Fire Department to the rescue. "Upon arrival fire crews discovered two patients, one with serious but non-life threatening injuries, the second patient suffered from no injuries," Trevor Bredin from West Kelowna Fire Rescue said in a media release. " The injured patient was winched 180 feet from the bottom of the canyon with a Search and Rescue helicopter. The second patient was walked out of the canyon without incident."</image:title>

<image:caption>On Sunday, a climber was injured after sliding 200 feet down Mount Severide and was rescued by Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR). The climber suffered a fractured leg. VSAR said on social media, “Reaching the subject first, the heli-winch rescue team was able to stabilize the subject, transport the remaining group members to the trailhead below, and return to pick up the subject for direct transportation to a waiting ambulance at the Vernon airport.” VSAR emphasized the importance of preparedness in the unpredictable mountain conditions, advising climbers to include experienced members, carry critical gear like GPS devices, and be ready for changing environments. The rescue was a joint effort by VSAR, RCMP, and BC Emergency Health Services, with gratitude extended to Air Rescue One Heli Winch Society for their skilled helicopter pilot navigating challenging high-altitude and mountainous terrain. <image:caption>On Sunday, three calls came in regarding an injured snowmobiler in the mountains between Faquier and Revelstoke. Nairn said the calls for rescue came from different sources, with each source providing a different location for the injured party, suggesting three people were in trouble. While crews were responding to the calls, Nairn said it was determined all three calls were for the same rescue where a snowmobiler had struck a tree and fractured his femur. “Because it was over four hours travel time by road, we activated our heli-winch rescue team,” she said. “We deployed our ground team and we deployed Air Rescue One.” Then while transporting the man with the broken femur to hospital, another call came in about an injured snowmobiler in the Shuswap side of Hunter's Range. “We handed off our first patient and immediately deployed again,” Nairn said. “We had a badly injured snowmobiler, with a spinal injury. We did a hoist rescue and transported them to BC ambulance.” Read more.</image:caption>
